In a world where climate change poses one of the greatest challenges of our time, it is more important than ever for companies to take responsibility and actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) provides a clear and scientifically grounded framework for this purpose. Together with the Otto Group, we have set an ambitious climate protection goal with three sub-goals and validated them by joining the SBTi in February 2024.
We need you to achieve these goals and make a significant contribution to climate protection together! On this page, you will learn how.
Science-Based Targets are climate protection goals based on the latest scientific findings. They provide companies with a clear path to reduce their emissions in line with the requirements of the Paris Agreement. The goals help limit global warming to 1.5 °C. Companies set specific, measurable targets that are regularly reviewed and adjusted to ensure they are on the right track.
What are the SBT goals of OTTO and the Otto Group:
Our climate protection and sustainability goals have been an integral part of our corporate strategy since 1986. Therefore, the motivation was high to elevate our already ambitious goals to a new level. As part of the Otto Group, OTTO took the significant step at the beginning of 2024 to have its climate protection goals officially validated by the SBTi. This is not only a commitment to our values but also a strategic step to strengthen our competitiveness. We go beyond the required measures by voluntarily linking our marketplace business to SBT.
8,715 companies worldwide have validated their targets with the SBTi (476 companies in Germany)
An additional 2,636 companies worldwide have committed to having their targets validated (227 companies in Germany)
OTTO had its targets validated in February 2024
By 2031, we plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 42% compared to 2021, absolutely and without compensation—not only in our own operations but throughout the entire supply chain, including the use of sold products by customers.
Three sub-goals have been established:
Absolute reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 (compared to 2021)
Supplier Engagement: At least 75% of third-party brands based on purchasing volume and at least 20% of marketplace partners based on Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) have set an own SBT, that was validated by the SBTi, by the end of the 2027/28 financial year.
Absolute reduction of Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% by 2031 (compared to 2021)
For our external brand partners, marketplace partners, and retailers, this means a commitment to becoming part of this sustainable transformation.
The focus of this info hub is on the Supplier Engagement goal (sub-goal 2) to collaborate with companies that have set their own SBTs. By 2027, 20% of marketplace sales and 75% of sales with external brands are to be generated by partners with their own SBTi target. Through exchange within the Otto Group, we aim to leverage synergies, particularly in the production of our own and licensed brands, to effectively achieve our goals.
By collaborating with OTTO and aligning with the SBTi, you will not only benefit from a positive image but also have the opportunity to strengthen your own climate protection goals. This can lead to an improved market position and stronger customer loyalty. Additional benefits include preparation for future regulations, resource-efficient production, and improved access to capital markets
