Arrive, network & get to know the company

We know that every beginning is difficult. That's why we want to make it as easy as possible for our new working students and interns to get started in their new roles. The student onboarding program "Students@OTTO" helps our new colleagues to better understand the corporate culture, to network with each other and to get a first impression of the whole company.

For a successful start

An onboarding program just for students - but how did it come about and how does it differ from the onboarding programme for permanent employees? Pascal from the recruiting team told us all about it and much more.

Hi Pascal! Tell us briefly who you are and what your role is here at OTTO.

"I'm Pascal and I started at OTTO as an intern about two years ago. After that, I stayed on as a working student in the Recruiting team and have been a permanent HR Manager since November 2022. My responsibilities include recruiting for Inhouse Consulting on one hand and on the other hand I'm responsible for the Students@OTTO program, of which an important part is the organization of the onboarding."

Why were Starter Days for students cretaed?

"Young professionals are an important target group for us. That's why we want to give all students the attention and support they deserve right from the start. Based on this, the "Welcome Students@OTTO" format was created, in which, funnily enough, I myself was one of the first participants. The onboarding of new colleagues has always been very important to us, because we have recognised the importance of a structured start in a company as large as OTTO.

What content is taught during the onboarding? Are there any focus topics?

"During onboarding, various topics are covered, which are presented by the departments themselves, e.g. the brand and sustainability strategy and the platform transformation. However, the main focus is on the customer perspective to understand what makes OTTO an e-commerce company and how the different teams contribute to the customer experience. Participants learn where they can influence this experience. Of course, there are also general tips and advice from the HR department. Our Leading Principles are also an important part of the onboarding. They serve as signposts to guide our colleagues when making important decisions and in their daily work."

What makes the Starter Days so special?

"Our Starter Days have two special features. Firstly, they bring together different groups of new employees. In the beginning, we start in small groups, exclusively with interns and working students, which creates a great dynamic. Later, as part of the onboarding process, they are mixed in with the new permanent employees to enable them to socialise with other newcomers.

And secondly, the Starter Days are characterised by their intensity and duration. Both permanent employees and interns as well as working students go through two full weeks of our comprehensive onboarding. However, interns and working students are given more time to familiarise themselves with their specialist areas. This in-depth introduction is what makes the Starter Days so special."

What feedback do you receive about the onboarding?

"The feedback from our working students and interns is usually very positive. The comprehensive support provided to our new colleagues is often highlighted here. We are very pleased to hear that the two-week onboarding phase is so appreciated. This time is valuable not only for the students, but also for us. The constant exchange of ideas provides us with new ideas and helps us to constantly improve the onboarding prorgam. For example, in addition to the joint lunch on the first official onboarding day, we have introduced a regular lunch for our interns and working students.
