Seeing through the competence jungle:
Creativity

Testing new ways in product development with creativity methods

Creativity is one of the most valuable resources we possess as humans. It is the key to new ideas, innovative solutions and a world full of possibilities . Especially due to the rapid development of robots, computers and artificial intelligence, creativity manages to distinguish us from the machines. With the help of our creative way of thinking and acting, we can break new ground in our work and drive our success.

But why is that the case, and what can you do to boost your own creativity? In the third part of our series "Seeing through the skills jungle", our colleague Gerhard has the answer to exactly these questions.

Creativity as the key to success

Gerhard has been working as Creative Lead for Apps and User Experience at OTTO for almost 10 years. His job is to adapt and improve the user experience for OTTO app users. In doing so, he is always confronted with new challenges. Creativity and curiosity help him to master them. But what exactly does creativity mean to him and how does he manage to never run out of ideas? That's what he has now revealed to us.

Tell me Gerhard, what do you understand by creativity?

"The general vernacular often thinks that creativity is something musical. Creative people like to paint and draw or make music. That's not wrong at all, but I think that creativity is much more the curiosity to get to the bottom of a problem until I find the optimal solution. It's not for nothing that they say "Necessity is the mother of invention" and I think that describes it quite well. As soon as I have a problem or a need somewhere, I always start to want to solve it. And that's what being creative means to me."

Why does creativity play such a big role in everyday work?

"Our team puts users at the center of everything we do. We want to reduce hurdles for them. The research team is always sending us customer testimonials and figures that are not always positive. The most important thing then is to be open to the case in question, to accept the problem, to investigate it, and to derive initial approaches to solving it. In other words, I need creativity to turn the users' obstacles into solutions."

Do you have any tips on how I can strengthen my own creativity?

"The lever for creativity is inspiration. If you go through life attentively, you can get inspiration at every turn. This can happen even through the smallest things in everyday life. For example, on my way to work on the train, I like to observe the people around me and see how they deal with the smallest difficulties. That can be super exciting! You can also gather a lot of inspiration from conversations with friends and discussions with colleagues. That's exactly why I think it's so important to be sensitive to this. Because that's the only way to see the added value they can bring to our lives."
