A typical day with Julia

Hi Julia!

Hi, I'm Julia and I've been working in Advertising Marketing at OTTO since January 2018. I started as a working student during my studies and currently work as a Junior Manager Operations at OTTO Retail Media - in our new Advertising Services department. This means: Among other things, I am responsible for the implementation of advertising (Inshop Promotion) on otto.de, Spondored Product Ads and Sponsored Brand Ads and thus implement the wishes of suppliers and partners in the form of campaigns.

The start of the day

Before I get started with my responsibilities, I meditate for 15 minutes, take a short exercise or stretching session and enjoy a good breakfast. Thanks to the flexible working hours at OTTO, I can decide for myself when to get to the laptop. Regardless of whether I start work at 8:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m., one thing is certain: at the beginning of each day, I inform my team that I'm available - a nice routine in times of mobile working. Then I look at my calendar and structure my workday.

The morning

Much of my work consists of repetitive activities and regularly occurring routines. We use Kanban boards for this. On these boards, the statuses of individual projects are recorded and the collaboration with other interfaces becomes visible. The dynamics between the other teams and ours in particular have a strong impact on my day-to-day work: For example, I work closely with the colleagues from the individual purchasing areas and the partner management of OTTO Market . They coordinate with the suppliers and partners and then allocate advertising budgets to the individual marketing products.

In general, our goal in this sparring is always to continuously maximize the joint benefit. It's exciting to work with these areas - if I can arrange it, I'd like to try my hand at partner or category management. These are my closest interfaces and I think that sometimes a change of perspective, for example through job shadowing, is helpful in order to become even better - also in terms of collaboration.

When I look at my work now, it is very similar to that of my colleagues - perhaps a good indication for people interested in the field 😊. Personally, I am lucky to be able to focus on Home & Living. In the past, many of the suppliers and partners were strongly focused on brick-and-mortar retail and had little or no experience in retail media. Implementing campaigns together to generate higher visibility among customers and thus maximize the benefits for our suppliers and partners fills me with satisfaction and motivates me every day. I often compare my work to that of a gardener - I water my plants every day and enjoy their growth.

The lunch break

I was thinking about sharing a favorite lunch. Honestly, though, I love breakfast! Even on campus, the buttered pretzels at the Bistro are my absolute go-to. At lunch, I honestly sometimes have a hard time tearing myself away from work. Not good at all, I know. But when I do, I also like to use the break for an exchange with other departments. I'm well networked within the company and like to go out for a meal or a coffee with others - that's part of it 😊.

The afternoon

After the break, I continue with my day-to-day business. In my field, it's important to have enthusiasm, a high level of self-motivation, a basic interest in retail media, and the ability to work in a team - but that's not all. Many skills can only be acquired on the job. For example, when it comes to our various systems: we use them to implement our marketing products. Working on these products requires not only a certain technical affinity, but also a willingness to acquire new knowledge. We are a rapidly growing sector with a wide variety of focal points - here, those who apply their knowledge in a targeted manner are successful.

And my team does just that. Professional, committed and dynamic - that's how I would describe our way of working . We have a wide variety of internal and external interfaces, towards which we behave in accordance with our corporate values. Fairly and in partnership. In fact, I don't find that difficult at all. We love what we do and we show it. Each of us does great work and always keeps an eye on the market and changing interests.

The end of the day

My workday starts just as flexibly as it ends. As nice as I find it to start early, finishing work late also has its advantages. Sometimes I leave at 3:00 p.m., but other times I don't leave until 7:00. The last things I do before I leave? I definitely take a look at my tasks for the coming days, enter my working hours and say goodbye to my colleagues.

And finally: Why OTTO and the Retail Media?

I've already raved about my team - I'm happy to repeat that 😊. We value and respect each other and support each other. Even though it may sound trite, I actually look forward to every single working day. Because I'm lucky enough to work for OTTO, a company whose culture I can identify with. And I work within a great team and with a manager who values me and encourages me. All of this also motivates me, for example, to strengthen OTTO's position as a retailer and platform with my daily work. I want to inspire and retain customers, suppliers and partners for OTTO.
