Hi, I'm Thierry and I have the honor of being the first apprentice at OTTO to train as an IT Specialist for Data & Process Analysis since August 2021.
I always start my day with a big glass of water and a cold shower - yes, even in winter! 😉 My workday then starts between 7:00 am and 7:30 am. First, I go through my appointments and tasks for the day and adjust them if necessary. After that, I process all urgent mails. Then I pick a suitable playlist for the day - jazzhop, Afrodrill, techno or rock, depending on my mood and the task at hand. And then it starts.
My main job is to support the teams along the data value chain and acquire the relevant knowledge for this in different formats. I learn a lot about various working methods, soft skills, different programming languages and tech stacks. During my training I have the opportunity to get to know different teams and their tasks. I choose the teams myself in consultation with my instructor.
My workdays vary depending on the team I am currently assigned to. I usually use the morning to work on the learning formats assigned to me, for example tutorials. This is followed by the daily meetings. As a team, we discuss the status of individual tasks and work packages and clarify what's coming up for the day. On some days, this is followed by other appointments, such as departmental meetings. Then I continue to work on tricky issues and program to move projects and tasks forward.
At around 1:00 pm., I start my lunch break. On campus, I go to the Elbe - our company cafeteria - with colleagues and then go for a short digestive walk. When I work from home, I exercise or cook myself something and go for a walk after lunch. I think it's good and important to get away from the laptop and move around during the break. Sometimes I come up with new solutions or get new inspiration right there.
At the beginning of the year, we drew attention to OTTO as a tech employer with a personnel marketing campaign - Thierry was part of the campaign.
In the afternoon, I devote myself to my tasks again or continue my to-dos. I work very closely with my team members on some issues. This gives me the chance to learn from the experiences and perspectives of the others. In the afternoon, I often have other meetings, for example from the InMigration network. All OTTO employees can get involved in this and many other networks and communities.
If there are no more appointments and I'm done with my tasks for the day, I finish work between 3:00 and 4:00 pm. Thanks to flexitime , I can organize my days very flexibly. Before I go home, I prepare the training reports for the day and plan my to-dos for the next day. After that, I look forward to meeting friends or to my analog camera. 😊
Start as an apprentice or duali at OTTO!
The apprenticeship is exciting, informative and challenging for me. I get to get to know different teams, can plan my own assignments and am already given responsibility and a lot of freedom as a trainee. That's exactly how I imagine an apprenticeship to be.
