From A for air purifier to Z for zucchini seeds, OTTO’s range already includes several hundred thousand items from the home improvement, garden and DIY departments. And the e-commerce company has plans to go even further in this direction: in the coming months, otto.de will start offering a comprehensive DIY range

When people think of OTTO, they probably think of fashion or furniture, technology or white goods such as washing machines, fridges and dishwashers. But what many people don’t know is that several hundred thousand items from the DIY range can already be found on otto.de. Some of these are products that OTTO offers as a trader and retailer in its own right, but there are also many products on offer from marketplace partners who sell their goods in the shop as part of OTTO's platform development strategy. “In the Garden & DIY category alone, the number of marketplace partners on otto.de is now in the high three-digit range,” says Frank Gallus, who heads the sales department at OTTO Market.

Delivery to the desired destination

There’s a huge benefit to be gained from ordering a garden shed, a swimming pool or a sun umbrella, insulating materials, a bathtub or a solar energy system via otto.de: customers get their goods delivered directly to their home address, no matter how heavy or bulky they are. This means that customers don’t have to drive to a hardware store themselves or organise a delivery that then takes a long time to arrive. This makes the shopping experience pleasant and convenient. And if customers want to, they can have some of the products they have ordered assembled or connected up at home for them.

The DIY range is expanding

“Our goal is to offer a comprehensive DIY range on otto.de,” says Hans Schabert, Head of Garden & DIY. Our offer, our range and the number of brands we host – that’ll all be significantly expanding over the months ahead. “That's why we're still open to partners who want to sell their DIY products on our platform,” adds Gallus.

About three quarters of the Garden & DIY product range is already available. “Items that we don’t yet have on the platform will be added in the coming weeks. There are also some cases where we need to ensure that third parties who want to sell their products on our platform are complying with all the relevant legal obligations, for example the Fertiliser Ordinance. This is sometimes quite complicated and time-consuming. We’re working flat out on both aspects.”
