Culture & cooperation

The topic of cooperation is very important to us in many ways. It determines our culture and how it feels when we arrive in the office on a Monday morning. On one hand it's about how we interact as colleagues, in teams and departments, as well as in our work on projects and strategic areas. On the other hand it naturally concerns the collaboration between staff and managers. All this is the foundation of our corporate culture at OTTO.

We’re changing! The advance of digitalisation also requires a change in our corporate culture. Openness, speed and courage are the values that will take us forward – and this includes a new understanding of leadership and cooperation. We’re dropping outdated ways of thinking and focussing on a culture of trust. Trust in one another and freedom also play major roles in promoting an independent, self-reliant approach to our work together.

Our aspiration: to challenge the status quo! We’re driving innovation forward and working on the e-commerce of tomorrow. To actively shape our cultural transformation we have a blog for the open discussion of topical issues, a dialogue tool with a newsfeed as well as a new ‘unplugged’ event format. All these initiatives are devoted to cultural transformation, driven by dialogue, feedback and interaction.


No matter whether our employees are looking for the right contact person, sharing their knowledge via social media channels, or simply stimulating discussions, the intranet and our Group-wide ottogroupnet bring all these functions together. What’s more, our employees can coordinate projects efficiently and hold virtual meetings via Skype. All this happens quickly, easily and effectively - that’s networking today!


We have got to grips with the challenges of the digital world of work and have developed a new understanding of leadership. We encourage our managers and employees to develop new ways of working together. Managers need to embrace the principles of entrepreneurial leadership so they can better motivate their staff and be more convincing role models. They cultivate networking, they are talent managers, and they support an open feedback culture. We also attach great importance to value orientation and mutual respect here.
We are convinced that we can drive forward cultural transformation in the digital age with a new form of leadership.

We stagger our work on otto.de, in agile teams applying agile project methods. This is where personal cooperation is particularly valuable. In our current ‘Lhotse’ project, for example, in which we develop innovative and individual software for our online shop, it’s personal communication, animated discussion and joint brainstorming that makes a considerable contribution to its success. When we’ve successfully completed a major go-live, we swap our ideas about it in barcamps. At events such as Design Thinking workshops and Innovation Days we go into greater depth in our personal communication, so we can develop new ideas – and make our otto.de product even better!
