The objective is clear: by 2020 all the wooden furniture that OTTO offers its customers are to be made from 100 per cent FSC©-certified wood – that is, carry the seal of the independent Forest Stewardship Council. To raise its customers’ awareness of this objective, OTTO has launched its 'One purchase. One tree. One forest.' campaign.
The principle of the campaign is simple. For each piece of FSC© solid-wood furniture purchased, OTTO will be planting a tree on Amrum in the campaign period throughout October. This way the company aims to raise its customers’ awareness of OTTO's commitment and reinforce their perception of the issue of sustainability through a topic-specific campaign, starting on 26 September to mark the official, international FSC© Friday.
Working in partnership with Bergwaldprojekt e.V., the goal is to transform the unstable forest that is threatened by global warming on the North Sea island of Amrum into a forest that is fit for the future by planting new trees. “Alongside cotton, wood is the most important raw material that OTTO works with”, explained Anja Dillenburg, Head of Corporate Responsibility OTTO, adding that “with this specific forest experience directly on our doorstep, we are making our commitment tangible.”
The FSC is a not-for-profit, international organisation under which environmental associations, social organisations, forward-looking forestry operations and timber-processing companies work together to achieve an improvement in forest management worldwide. For this reason, products made from wood that comes from sustainably managed forests are distinguished with the FSC seal.
'We’re on the right track”, says Anja Dillenburg. “The FSC© share of our assortment in the last Spring/Summer season already stood at a proud 38 per cent – and in our solid-wood furniture range this is already at 100 per cent today.”
